Your Guide to Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Your Guide to Anti Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle treatments are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments nowadays, accounting for a staggering 38% of procedures worldwide. Whether you’re hoping to tackle a specific condition or just look a few years younger, anti-wrinkle injections can be a great way to reduce the appearance of age-related skin concerns like fine lines and wrinkles.

If this is something you’re considering, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the facts before taking the plunge. So, here’s our simple guide to anti-wrinkle injections.

What is botulinum toxin and how does it work?

Anti-wrinkle injections are a purified protein derived from Botulinum Toxin A, a toxin produced by the bacterium known as Clostridium Botulinum. While this is, in fact, the bacteria responsible for food poisoning, anti-wrinkle treatments use it in such small doses that they are deemed perfectly safe for both medical and cosmetic use.

During an anti-wrinkle treatment, your qualified Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner will inject the botulinum toxin into certain muscles. The toxin blocks the signals sent from your nerves to your muscles, which prevents the targeting muscles contracting. This then improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as the skin covering the muscle can no longer contract either.

What can it treat?

Anti-wrinkle injections can help to tackle a wide range of problem areas. Many choose to treat facial wrinkles, but the injections can be used to tackle other concerns too. For instance, they can be used for jaw sculpting, brow lifting and lip flip procedures. Not only that, but botulinum toxin injections can even help treat teeth grinding and headaches.

How long does the treatment last?

Most clients will see results in just 3 to 5 days after treatment, with the full effects being visible after around 14 days. In terms of how long the treatment will last, it can vary depending on factors such as your age, the severity of the wrinkles being treated, and even your activity level.

That being said, the average time frame for botulinum toxin efficacy is around 3 to 4 months. You should be aware that muscle activity is likely to gradually return from around 6 to 8 weeks onwards, but you will not be able to book another anti-wrinkle treatment with us until the 12 week mark.

Are there any side effects to be aware of?

As with any medical procedure, some minor side effects are possible with anti-wrinkle injections. The biggest risk involved in anti-wrinkle injections is a drop in the brows and/or eyelids, though this is thankfully a rare and easily resolved complication.

Immediate side effects include swelling at the injection site(s) and bruising, both of which should resolve themselves relatively quickly. Some factors can exacerbate bruising, but there’s no need to worry – your Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner will go through all of this with you beforehand.
